Although we have made small amounts of Pinot Noir from the ‘Lochleven’ Vineyard to blend with Shiraz since 2010, we started releasing a 100% Pinot Noir since the 2015 vintage.
2023, although warm and dry was good for the 2023 Pinot Noir fruit. Pinot was the first red variety harvested, before some of the Semillons in the Valley. This kept the overall ripeness in check and the acid levels up.
Pinot Noir from vines planted in 1973 on the Kindred family’s, ‘Lochleven’ Estate on the corner of Deasys and McDonalds Roads in Pokolbin. The cuttings to plant ‘Lochleven’ were taken off the McWilliams Mothervine vineyard which originated from the original James Busby cuttings and is believed to be the MV6 clone.
Grapes were hand-picked and then fermented in open vats and plunged twice daily. 30% whole bunches were retained in the ferment.
A light strawberry colour in the glass with a bouquet of mulberries and raspberries, but undeniable Pinot Noir. The predominantly used French oak adds a little spice to the party. The light—mid weight palate shows red fruit flavours with great fragility. It has great length of flavour and balanced acid structure which will see it into a great future.
Medium term. Up to 10 years.
