Alexander Munro was winemaker Rhys Eather’s great-great-grandfather and these true reserve wines are released only in years that reflect the status of the label. The best Semillon parcel harvested is selected each year to make this wine.
2012 was an extremely wet Hunter Valley vintage with little or no red wines being produced. Semillon once again proved its suitability to the region with winemakers still being able to produce good wines despite the conditions.
Situated along the Hermitage Road sand flat in Pokolbin, the ‘Braemore’ vineyard is the fruit source for the 2012 vintage and the mature vines produced a yield of 2.5 tonnes per acre.
The hand harvested fruit was whole bunch pressed and then fermented in stainless steel.
Pale straw yellow with a green tinge still. The nose has scents of dry straw, lanolin and lemon custard, with lemon present on the palate also. Mouth-watering acidity keeps the palate tight and focused around the long flavour profile.
Drinking well now, this wine has all the flavour and acid structure that will allow it to cellar comfortably for a further decade.
Pan-fried fish.
