2024 Halliday Wine Companion
2024 Halliday Wine Companion
The second in line of the drought-ravaged ’17, ’18 and ’19 vintages. The grapes come from two highly praised vineyards, with the best three barrels chosen, enough to produce 87 dozen bottles. A superb shiraz that plays a trick of presenting a wine that is so damn good it can be enjoyed tonight or 50 years hence. Sets the price bar for Hunter shiraz.

Background

BLACK was originally meant to be a one-off commemorative wine, the thinking being 2011 was a fantastic Shiraz vintage which coincided with our 20th vintage release. The BLACK has subsequently been released from the 2014, 2017 and 2018 vintages.

Vintage Notes

The drought continued in 2018 with very light flowering and low fruit set, resulting in highly reduced yields. Minimal rain during vintage allowed superb fruit to be harvested. The 2018 vintage wines were a pleasure to make and in time will be revered and held up there with the best Hunter red vintages.

Vineyard Notes

The best three barrels were carefully selected from our 2018 Shiraz sources. The ‘Homestead’ and ‘Roche Estate’ were the two vineyards selected.

Winemaking

All of our old-vine Shiraz is ultimately open fermented with daily plunging and pumping over carried out. After 18 months of maturation in new and one year old French oak, BLACK was bottled unfined with moderate filtration. Production: 87 dozen (1044 bottles).

Tasting Notes

Deep crimson with purple hues in the glass. The nose oozes concentrated black and blue fruits. The palate is full bodied with a supple and velvety mouthfeel. The length of flavour and balance is exemplary.

Peak Drinking / Cellaring Potential

This wine has all the characteristics that are required for very long term cellaring.

Food Matches
