‘Alexander Munro’ Shiraz is our flagship wine and made from the best parcel of shiraz fruit we receive each year.
Situated on Mistletoe Lane in Pokolbin, the ‘Black Cluster’ vineyard is the Shiraz source for this wine, which at harvest was still owned by Pernod Ricard. The vines have an average age of 40+ years, with some much older and are dry-land grown.
Hand picked fruit, 60% with stems retained, was crushed into open vats and plunged twice daily to optimize flavour and tannin extraction. The wine was then lightly airbag pressed and transferred into French oak barriques of which 50% were new. After 16 months of maturation the wine was lightly egg white fined and then bottled with moderate filtration.
Winemaker’s comments: 2014 is being regarded as the best Hunter Valley Shiraz vintage since the legendary 1965 vintage. Perfect growing conditions, coupled with a completely trouble-free ripening and harvest period gave us immaculate Shiraz grapes to work with.
The medium purple colour is an early indication of the intensity of this wine. Blackberry, blueberry and plum flavours fill the mouth as well as some dark chocolate and mocha. An extremely well balanced Shiraz, everything in its place and a very long, lingering finish. Maybe the best Shiraz we have made so far.
This wine has all the characteristics that are required for long term cellaring. 30+ years.
Red meat dishes and aged cheeses.
