Pioneer Hunter Valley winemaker, Alexander Munro was winemaker, Rhys Eather’s great-great-grandfather and these true reserve wines are released only in years that reflect the status of the label. The 2000 vintage was the Trophy winner at the 2000 Hunter Valley Wine Show for current vintage Chardonnay.
The old-vine ‘Casuarina’ Vineyard located on Hermitage Road in Pokolbin was again the Chardonnay vineyard source for the most recent 2017 vintage. This vineyard and has been consistently used by us since 2007 and is is managed by Ken Braye.
Handpicked fruit was whole bunch pressed and barrel fermented in French oak hogsheads of which close to 50% were new.
After 10 months maturation and no malolactic fermentation allowed, we bottled in February 2018 under screwcap.
2017 was one of the hottest Hunter vintages in a long time with 47 degrees experienced in mid February. On one hand, that meant full flavour ripeness, but on the other, very very low yields.
A full-bodied Chardonnay with the expected array of melon, peach, nectarine and paw paw fruit characters. The palate is generous but underpinned by fine acidity which keeps everything in harmony. The finish is exemplary.
