2005 'Epoch' Semillon Wine Notes

2005 'Epoch' Semillon

Wine Notes

Background:

ep-och: An interval of time memorable for extraordinary events and important influences.

Semillon is traditionally the first fruit harvested in the Hunter Valley each year for still wine production. For Meerea Park, this signals the commencement of each vintage and this is our 'epoch'.

Fruit Source:

This premium wine is crafted from Semillon sourced from the Howard family's "Somerset" vineyard in Pokolbin. The Semillon block was planted in 1968.

Fermentation & Maturation:

The handpicked fruit was cold fermented entirely in stainless steel then bottled under Stelvin to capture the varietal freshness of this variety.

Winemakers Comments:

The 2005 vintage for Semillon in the Hunter is being considered as the best for the decade so far. Warm days in early January and a rain free harvest period ensured ripe clean fruit.

2005 'Epoch' is more aromatic than usual, touching on tropical notes. There is terrific length and mouth feel to the wine with an amazing acid structure that makes it approachable now. Further bottle maturation will only be of benefit to the wine.

Cellaring:

7-10 years

What the experts say

'Epoch is Meerea Park's entry level Semillon. This one has just been released and I have already knocked off three bottles. The 2005 vintage is just so (too) easy to drink young. Unusually aromatic for a young semillon with aromas of lemon, passionfruit slice and a touch of yeast. Clean, clear and very direct on the palate. Beautiful soft acidity. This is a wine of remarkable freshness and purity. It can be enjoyed now or put in the cellar to develop further complexity. Magic stuff'.

Rated : 94 - Gary Walsh - www.winorama.com.au

"The best sub $20 Semillon tasted this year. Remarkably approachable given its youth. Gives away its friendliness by mixing tropical fruit aromatics in with the usual lemon/lime of young Semillon. Comes into its own on the palate, quite seamless, a beautiful integration of fruit and acidity, lovely texture and composure. It glides around the mouth quite effortlessly-very hard to fault this wine, especially at the price".

"Bright green-yellow; very intense and focused citrus and grass flavours; terrific drive and length; a great Hunter Semillon vintage example once again"

Rating 94 - Drink 2013. James Halliday - 2007 Wine Companion.

"Fabulous Hunter semillon from an excellent vintage. Dry hay and citrus notes. A lovely, fresh, balanced style giving every indication it will also impress in a decade or two. One case for now and one for the cellar". Rating 92.
