Region: Hunter Valley
Alcohol: 14%
Background: Meerea Park was the first winery to release this blend from the Hunter Valley. Shiraz Viognier is the blend produced in France’s Cote Rotie Appellation in the Northern Rhoné Valley.
Fruit Source: Viognier and Shiraz from the ‘Lindsay Hill’ vineyard near Denman and Shiraz from a mature vineyard in Pokolbin situated on red basalt soil.
Fermentation & Maturation: Viognier fruit and pressings were added to the shiraz parcels and allowed to co-ferment in a closed tank. The 2007 cuvee consists of 95% Shiraz and 5% Viognier and was matured for 16 months in French oak barriques and hogsheads, 10% of which were new.
Winemaker’s comments: 2007 was as close to a perfect vintage as we have had for Shiraz. Already very low yielding vines, still stressed from the heat of 2006, and a warm dry February allowed the fruit obtain maximum flavour ripeness at moderate baume levels.
Tasting note: Dark crimson in colour, the nose has the dark fruit spectrum characters we were expecting from 2007. There is no real effect on the nose from the viognier, but it reveals itself in a restrained manner on the palate where it is in harmony with the blackberry fruit, where there is also a slight hint of licorice. Tannins are ripe and silky.
Cellaring: Short to medium term.
What the experts say
"Bright purple in the glass with mixed ripe berries, dark toasted spices and a gentle earthy side. The palate has a smart drive through the entry and fleshes out in the middle before gearing into some drying tannin through the back. Crisp, elegant and compact finish." 93 Points.
