Viognier is proving to be well suited to the Upper Hunter climate producing fruit with true varietal characteristics. Shiraz Viognier is the blend produced in France's Cote Rotie Appellation in the Northern Rhone Valley. Fruit SourceViognier from the 'Lindsay Hill' vineyard near Denman and Shiraz from vineyards in Pokolbin. Fermentation & MaturationViognier pressings are added to shiraz ferments with the balance of Viognier added at the first racking. The blend consists of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier and has spent 15 months in predominantly French oak. Winemakers CommentsThe 2003 vintage was near perfect conditions for Shiraz. It was hot and dry, which reduced yields by up to 50% of normal. No seasonal rain meant fruit was harvested at precisely the correct time. The big fruited and tannic Shiraz has been tamed by the Viognier addition to leave a very rich, but incredibly soft and rounded red wine that is drinking well on release. Short to medium term cellaring will also benefit the wine. CellaringShort to medium term. What the experts say
"The Viognier element is so lifted that it almost seems volatile, and the ripeness levels are perfectly pitched. It's a good earth-driven wine from a great year, well worth buying." 91 points.
