Viognier is proving to be well suited to the Upper Hunter climate producing fruit with true varietal characteristics. Shiraz Viognier is the blend produced in France's Cote Rotie Appellation in the Rhone Valley. Fruit SourceViognier from the 'Lindsay Hill' vineyard near Denman and Shiraz from vineyards in Pokolbin. Fermentation & MaturationBoth varieties were separately fermented, then matured in 10% new and the balance in older French oak for 15 months before being blended. The blend consists of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier. Winemakers CommentsEven with the addition of the Viognier to the Shiraz, this wine retains amazing colour and flavour intensity. The Viognier gives the nose a decided 'lift' with fragrances of violets and apricots. Predominately, older oak barrels were used as not to overpower the wonderful nose with oak. The palate is rich with cherry fruit and a hint of oak. CellaringShort to medium term.
What the experts say
"This is really fragrant with plums, stonefruit and blackberry punnet juice. Attacks sweet and raspberry-ish becoming sharper in the middle with a firm, tannin, dusty close. Let it breathe for an hour to get the best from it." 90 / 100.
