Viognier is proving to be well suited to the Upper Hunter climate producing fruit with true varietal characteristics. Shiraz Viognier is the blend produced in France's Cote Rotie Appellation in the Rhone Valley. Fruit SourceViognier from the 'Lindsay Hill' vineyard near Denman and Shiraz from vineyards in Pokolbin. Fermentation & MaturationBoth varieties were separately fermented, then matured in 10% new and the balance in older French oak for 15 months before being blended. The blend consists of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier. Winemakers CommentsEven with the addition of the Viognier to the Shiraz, this wine retains amazing colour and flavour intensity. The Viognier gives the nose a decided 'lift' with fragrances of violets and apricots. Predominately, older oak barrels were used as not to overpower the wonderful nose with oak. The palate is rich with cherry fruit and a hint of oak. CellaringShort to medium term. Awards: TOP 40 NSW Wines - 2002 NSW Wine Awards What the experts say
"This perfumed, gutsy red from the Hunter is a better drink-and better value-than newcomer Meerea Park's award-winning 2001 'The Aunts' Shiraz: the splash of viognier really adds personality and depth to the blend".
Max Allen-The Weekend Magazine-30th November 2002
"Rhys Eather has made some terrific reds in '01. This is a bargain for lovers of soft, deep, chocolaty Hunter shiraz. Toasty hints over sweet, ripe raisiny, fruit-cakey richness, profound flavour and liberal smooth tannins. Superb now and over the next eight years.
