2010 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc Wine Notes

2010 Semillon Sauvignon Blanc

Wine Notes

Region: Hunter Valley (60%) & Orange (40%)

Alcohol: 12.5%

Background: Meerea Park released a Sauvignon Blanc Semillon blend from 1997—2000, with the Sauvignon Blanc being sourced from McLaren Vale. This is our first release of this blend since then.

Fruit source: Semillon fruit was used from the Howard family’s ’Somerset’ vineyard in Pokolbin and Sauvignon Blanc from the high altitude (800m) ‘Kywarra’ vineyard at Orange. The Sauvignon Blanc fruit was trucked to Pokolbin overnight for processing.

Fermentation: As with the locally sourced Semillon, both parcels of fruit were crushed as soon as possible after harvest and treated      separately. The two parcels were then blended in a final ratio of 60% Semillon and 40% Sauvignon Blanc and bottled in May 2010.

Maturation:  No  maturation or oak treatment was undertaken before bottling in May 2010.

Winemaker’s comments: Much like 2009, the 2010 vintage started out very warm which ripened the white varieties quite early and  generally allowed their harvest before any significant rain events. Rain in mid February caused some concerns with the Shiraz harvest for later ripening vineyards but the quality of the 2010 vintage overall is very good.

Tasting note: A lovely nose of lemon and tropical fruits, the later being attributed to the Sauvignon Blanc component. The palate is crisp but flavoursome with fruit salad and mouth-watering citrus characters, good length of flavour and well balanced acidity.

Cellaring estimate: Drink now.

Suggested food match: Fresh and cooked seafood dishes, or simply on its own!

"Today, Meerea Park's wines are some of the finest in the region, in fact the whites are some of the best of their type in the country".

Tim White - Australian Financial Review - 14th August 2009

"Delicious green-gold colour. Perfect mix of primary and secondary flavours. Hay, lanolin, lemon zest and lime. Great complexity. Great freshness. Length is good. The marvel of good Hunter Valley semillon? This is an example."Rated : 93 Points
